Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Beat the Goblin Camp Fight (Outdoor Party Section)

If you’re playing a more Heroic playthrough in Larian Studio’s Baldur’s Gate 3, one of the most challenging battles you’ll face in Act 1 is the outdoor section of the Goblin Camp. You’ve made it past the guards, past the feast, and defeated the Absolute’s bosses, and now you’re headed outwards directly in the worst fight of the bunch. Your party is grossly outnumbered and most likely at a location disadvantage. Here are a handful of tips to save you some time, irritation, and maybe even a couple of rage quits:

Don't Move From Under the Roof

Keep in the general rectangle you’ve spawned in. If you go any closer to the arches towards the uncovered garden area, the enemies beyond that wall will spawn in, and that’s an extra handful of damage coming at you that you don’t need during the initial run. Height is your friend. But it can also be your greatest enemy. Depending on your location in the immediate area, you’re not too far from a platform. Send one or multiple party members onto the platform to gain the High Ground advantage as soon as possible. Having a party member who knows Misty Step (i.e Tav, Wyll, Gale, or Lae’Zel) might be your best option here. But if enemies start wiping the floor with you before you’ve even got the chance to get close to the platform, destroy the platforms or the ladders leading to them. The goblins are just as eager to get up there first. If you can’t have the height advantage, no one can.

Use Grease

You can use an environmental advantage several times in your Baldur’s Gate journey, and this fight has one of the most effective setups to do so. If you’ve spawned into the fight by the entryway door and you’re stuck behind the giant, have one of your mages cast Grease or use a grease bottle to ignite the area by the cooking spits or any of the torches. It’ll toast the goblins standing around there, and if you’ve positioned it effectively, any of the melee combat enemies are now bottlenecked and will have to run through the fire to get to you-and they’ll take damage in the process. Every little hit counts in this fight.

Target the Magic Users First

Those pesky Booyahgs and Devouts can heal their allies as quickly as they can destroy yours. Have your team target all of them first so that once the other goblins are on death’s door, they make it across the threshold. Eliminating the magic users can limit enemy recovery and keep heavy hitting to a minimum.

Companion Specific:

Astarion: If you’re traveling with Astarion and you’ve discovered his particular secret, Bite could be an excellent resource, but avoid using it too soon. Wait until you’re at least halfway through the fight and most of the enemies are gone,or until Astarion’s only got a couple of hit points left so you can gain some back. It’s a risk, but Bite can go a long way in finishing off some of the weaker enemies.

Wyll or Warlock-Build-Tav: If you’re reading this before the fight and have some leveling to do,note that the Warlock ability Hellish Rebuke could be a lethal advantage,so get that spell, or also get the upgraded Eldrich Blast that sends enemies back a few feet when you level up. During the fight, you’ll take a lot of hits, and if you time it right, Hellish Rebuke can reign down some fire-flavored karma, and upgraded Eldrich Blast can give you some precious distance between you and the enemies.

Once the goblins in the party hall are dispatched, head on over to the garden area and the ramparts beyond that. You can use the same techniques, but this is a lot less hassle because there are only four or five enemies who are awake, and then you can send the Tadpole gag up the ladder that leads to the second level of the garden and you can stealth kill all the sleeping enemies in any way you like, before they even know you’re there.

Overall, work smarter, not harder. It’s a frustrating, long-winded fight, but once it’s done, you can finally breathe and head back to the Grove to tell Zevlor the good news.
